Colours for black hair
This is your palette
In our quiz black hair pulls towards cool, deep and clear colouring, so most black-haired readers land in a Winter palette. A smaller share land in a deep Autumn instead – usually when the skin is olive or golden – and that difference matters more than the hair itself.
What it says about your colouring

Tips
- Keep the contrast your hair sets. Black hair already brings the darkest tone, so it carries pure white, true black and jewel colours – emerald, sapphire, ruby, fuchsia – that would overpower a lighter colouring.
- Look at your skin next. With fair or cool skin, black hair points to Winter: crisp white, icy pastels and strong darks. With olive or golden skin it may point to a deep Autumn: rust, olive, mustard, chocolate and warm teal.
- Black near the face, which can weigh down light hair, usually works for you: it repeats your hair. If you are cool, pair it with bright white rather than cream; if you are warm, with ivory or camel.
- Dusty, greyed colours – dusty rose, sage, taupe – can look tired next to black hair. If you love them, wear them away from the face and put a clear colour, or white, near it.
How to find your palette
Colour analysis reads three things in your colouring: warm or cool, light or deep, clear or soft. The quiz asks about your eyes, hair and skin, looked at in a mirror by a window in daylight. It never photographs or scans your face, and the palette it finds is yours to keep.
