Hip reads wider than shoulder. The work happens above the waist, drawing the eye up and squaring the top line.
The rule
Detail, structure and colour above the waist. Keep the lower half quiet, so the eye finishes at the top.
Pieces that work
- Structured shoulder jacketSquares the upper line
- Boat or wide necklineWidens the shoulder visually
- Statement sleeveDetail where you want attention
- Straight trouser in a quiet shadeThe lower half is the calm half
- A-line skirtFalls straight from the widest point instead of following it
- Printed blouseColour and pattern up top
- Cropped jacket ending at the waistStops above the widest point
Small adjustments
- TopsThis is where the money goes. Structure, colour, print, a sleeve with something happening in it – all of it above the waist.
- BottomsStraight or flat-fronted, in a fabric with enough body to hold its own shape. Gathers and patch pockets at the hip add a detail you did not ask for.
- OuterwearA jacket that ends at the waist, or well below the widest point, but never exactly on it. The shoulder seam on the bone is what makes the whole coat work.
The other six – foundations, one-pieces, beachwear, shoes, bags and accessories – are in the shape book that comes with the subscription.
What to skip
Hip-level detail – patch pockets, wide belts worn low, tapered trousers that narrow at the ankle.
How to find your body shape
Stand in front of a mirror and compare three widths: shoulders, waist and hips. The quiz shows four outlines and asks which is closest to yours, then your height and size, so the advice fits your build as well as your line.
