MondeStyle sets one cookie, once you start the quiz, press a button that takes you to payment, or ask for your result by email. It is called ms_sid. It holds a random number and nothing about you, and no script on the page can read it. Your browser keeps it for a year, and each time you come back it is renewed – so a subscription you pay for does not lock you out after a month.

It is how our server keeps your answers and your result together (see the privacy policy), and how it matches the payment Paddle confirms to this browser, so what you bought opens here. It also lets a subscription bought in this browser stop the three letters, since the last of them describes the subscription. It is used for nothing else and read by no one else.

In Paddle's window

When you pay, Paddle's own window opens over our payment page. It is Paddle's, loaded from Paddle, and Paddle sets its own cookies in it under its own cookie policy. Paddle's script loads on that one page only, after you have pressed a button to pay.

Advertising, if you allow it

The first time you open the site a line at the foot of the screen says we use cookies. Only after “Allow” do the scripts of Meta and Google load, and they set their own cookies – Meta’s _fbp, Google’s _gcl_au and others under their own cookie policies – to tell us which adverts bring readers here and which of them go on to pay. Closed with its cross, the line loads nothing and asks again on your next visit. Neither loads in our Android or iPhone app. Your answer is kept on this device.

What we do use

Your answers sit in your browser’s local storage, on your device, and a copy goes to our server as the privacy policy says. Local storage is not a cookie: no other site can read it, and clearing your browser data removes it from this device.

What that means

• A different browser or device starts again. Your answers live on this device, and a subscription opens in the browser you paid in.
• A private window forgets everything when you close it.
• Settings, then Reset clears this device now; “Delete my data” there clears our server too.
